Why do we do what we do?

Do you know what the oldest known peices of artwork are? Cave paintings, some dude thousands of years ago who felt the need to leave his mark. Now flash forward to modern day. Look around you. How many large blank areas of wall do you see? Those should all be covered in something. Stickers, gum, posters, and many other possibilities spring to my mind. Not just by my art or anyone's art in particular. I feel it should be covered by everyone's art. Personally my favorite pieces of art I've ever seen are the little battle scenes used to draw in our grade school notebooks. We may have gone and gotten slightly more educated but we're pretty much at that same place mentally. We still watch cartoons more often than regular people our age. We still skate the hills in our neighborhood at all hours of the night. In the immortal words of Andrew W.K., "we do what we like and we like what we do." Admittedly we're not the best at what we do, but we learn from each other and everyone else. Long incoherent rambling aside, that should give you some sort of glimpse inside of our barely functioning heads.

Happy Take Your Houseplants For A Walk Day!!!!

So lets do it... go make your houseplants get in shape and MAKE them WALK... they will walk if you convince them the right way... They like to be motivated with things like fresh soil when they come back or you could be an asshole and threaten them by saying I'm not going to water you or give you your nutrients until you've taken your walk. either way... get them to walk... today is their day to shine and their day to take a walk with you... also don't give in and carry them because that's what they want... they want to USE you and you can't let them.....

so once again happy take your houseplants for a walk day and remember to stay strong and they will listen and good luck...

CARTOON ADDICTS!!!!!

I know that we are... and I know for a fact that cartoons are the solution to global warming, they are the cure for AIDS, and all other diseases that have no found cure, they're the solution to world hunger, human trafficking, it would be the end of the drug war, and all other war, they would give everyone a level of knowledge that is REQUIRED to live and to succeed if "success" is your goal in life, and on top of all of that everyone would get to enjoy watching cartoons so if you want to help be a part of any solution, or cure, or anything else that would help to make this world a better place start by watching some classics... Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Popeye or any of the others... then make your way up to Adventure Time and Spongebob and Regular Show, and to make the world fully perfect (but not everyone can make it this far and thats OK you've already done your part if you've watched any cartoon) watch Super Jail, South Park, Aqua Teen, Squidbillies or The Brak Show... but again it doesn't matter which cartoon you watch as long as you have fun and realize that you're making this world a better place by doing it....

Live Life,                                                                                                                                  Make Love,
Enjoy It...                                                                                                                                  S'men It!!!!

Naked, naked, naked sitting cross-legged Naked, naked, naked and he was happy, happy, happy and he ate some beans... Wine, wine, wine Jessie had some wine he was happy, happy, happy and he ate some wine... Beans, beans, beans Jessie ate some beans and he drank some wine and he was happy, happy, happy as he drank some beans"

Here at LZR MTN

...and everywhere else... You are THE GREATEST ARTIST THAT EVER LIVED... and we don't care if you believe us or not, but here is our explanation... living is an art in its self... when you walk its second nature and when you walk alone you do it at your own pace, once you start to walk next to someone you know you either pick up the pace or drop it down... and don't even realize you've done it... talking is the same... each person has their own voice and way of speaking and I would compare that to standard art (painting, drawing, sculpting, writing music, etc) because it's one of a kind and nobody can perfectly duplicate it... and something as annoying (or peaceful) as cleaning the house is another perfect form of art... try to deny the FACT that you are a beautiful artist and your art is always being shown to the public for everyone to enjoy although most people do ignore majority of the pieces that you create every second of your life...

So now you know if you didn't all ready...
You are far better than us here at LZR MTN
so keep on ARTing as much as you can

LZR MTN IS ON THE RUN!!!!

We just passed a guy in a truck who had a bumper sticker with the good old American flag on it that said "THESE COLORS DON'T RUN" and we thought it was ironic because we are safely said the laziest country in the world as far as the general population is concerned. So yes, the majority of America doesn't RUN let alone jog, walk, or do any other kind of exercise, and to be honest I too fall into that category...

Here at LZR MTN
These colors DON'T RUN

We're Sorry...

So it's been a while since we've posted anything on here and we're sorry to keep you waiting... We truly love everyone of you that has been there to support us... All of you who were at Bellyfest we had a BLAST being there doing what we did and getting all of you to help us... those of you who weren't there again... We're sorry... And to those who have passed by any of our work and recognized that it was there, thank you again... I hope you all have a beautiful day hanging out under the notorious Washington weather and if you aren't from here in Washington... I send you the Manliest, Gnarliest, Happiest, Digital High Five of all time because we love having fans that are from outside of our home State...

Stencil 101

For a long time I've had a lot of people saying "I wish I could do art like that" when they see my stencils. Theres nothing wrong with a little self doubt but stencils are so damn easy that a monkey with down syndrome could do them, I'm living proof. With that in mind lets get started.

THINGS YOU WILL NEED:
  • Some sort of artwork for your stencil
  • Stencil Material (posterboard, cardstock, cardboard)
  • Sharpie Pen
  • Cutting Device (Xacto blades, utility knife, razor blade)
  • Spray Paint

THE DESIGN:

When starting out its best to try cutting out other peoples stencils. It helps you see how other people structure their stencil and you get to learn about the cutting process at the same time. Look at how they do their bridges and gaps (Bridges hold the stencil together). Don't set your sights on multiple layers or a super detailed stencil just yet. Go for a design that has rather large and odd shapes to cut out.

STENCIL MATERIAL:

Stencils can be made of lots of materials personally I use tagboard or some sort of thick paper. I've seen Banksy uses plain old corrugated cardboard. I know of other guys who use plastic "stencil" material. The main concern on any material should be will it stand up to multiple uses?

Find a way to get your design from a paper to the stencil material, I usually trace it directly to the material using a light box. I've used carbon paper to transfer the design as well.

Using your sharpie to lay out the shapes. Keep in mind you NEED to have bridges. And that implied lines are awesome for stencils.

THE CUTTING PART:Sweet, its time to cut out that stencil. Most people dread this part, Its my personal favorite part of the whole process.I Prefer to smoke a gnar bowl and watch some cartoons while I cut, but each to their own. Remember to take your time and make your cuts count. If your blade starts to rip the paper instead of cutting it, that means you needed to change the blade quite a
 while ago.
If you make a mistake and cut a bridge then simply put a piece of tape on both sides of the cut and trim the excess.

PAINTING:

Here's the tricky part, this can make or break your design. There are lots of paint choices, Keep in mind that the cheaper a paint is the lower quality it is. Flat paint tends to be a lot better than gloss, its easier to work with and drys way quicker. Montana Gold is a spendy paint but its worth every penny, its a good pressure for stencils and it dries fast.

Place your stencil against what you want to paint.

Hold the can about six to eight inches away from the stencil.

Don't try to fill the area in one pass, a slow buildup of paint works best.

If your doing this out on the street this would be a perfect time to put your stencil away and leave the area, paint fumes attract attention. We at Lazer Mountain are not stoked on the idea of defacing personal property, government property is fair game. But keep in mind illegal is illegal, theres no gray area.

OTHER HINTS AND TIPS:

Remember that you may not fully understand the process the first time through, and chances are you will make some mistakes, I do it all the time. Just keep in mind that all the pictures in this article are from someone else's first time cutting a stencil.

Dinosaurs MUST Die

With the recent Internet sensation Rebbecca Black being all the rage right now a rant about my extreme hatred for the music industry seems rather justified. So here goes:

Lets start things off with the fact that I by no means have the smallest problem with Rebbecca Black, she's a thirteen year old girl with dreams of being a "Pop star". A very common thing amongst the teen crowd, I've been there and totally understand.

The problem I have is the company behind her new found fame. Just a few minutes of Internet research will give you the scoop about Ark Music Factory. This is a company and so-called record label that provides its services for a reasonable fee. For a a couple grand you can simply buy your success in the music industry without all the trouble of learning how to play an instrument or write a song. GENIUS!

This means you don't have to spend years and years playing shitty clubs and dive bars with minimal crowds. No more having to experience life in order to write a song that comes from the heart. No more people coming up to you after a show to explain exactly why and how you suck at what you love to do. No more riding in a smelly van with a few of your closest friends not even sure if you have enough gas to make it to the next show.

So as a ten year veteran of the local music scene I now look back and wonder if that would have been a good choice for me.

The answer: FUCK NO!

I'm glad for each and every experience I've had at the bottom of the industry. I'm glad I've played shows where just the other bands and their girlfriends are there. I'm stoked I've been pulled over with a van full of underage intoxicated band members. Every time our shitty van had a problem. Every time I've finished playing a set and not one person clapped.

Has it made me a better musician? Far from it. I'm still the same half assed bass player I've always been.

What it has done is made me appreciate a song that was written from the heart. A shitty basement cassette tape that can barely be understood sounds far superior to these multi-million dollar productions that have been pumped out on pro-tools and auto tuned.

Remember here at this point that I'm not hating on the Rebbecca Blacks and Justin Beibers of the world, they are just unfortunate pawns. Brainwashed by the dollar sign they will never understand what it takes to be a real musician. Not everyone can be Pat The Bunny.

Fear not, there is a light on the horizon. The underground scene is full of amazing and talented artists. After attending a recent show my faith in the underground is revitalized. With local artists such as Success, Random Orbits, and the Damage Done still playing amazing house shows theres still good times to be had.

In the DIY world its not so much ability or talent. Its that you do it and enjoy what you do.
